RALEIGH—The 18th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team came from behind and won a 4-3 thriller at 20th-ranked NC State on Sunday afternoon, clinching the third seed in next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
NC State won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, the won two of the first three singles decisions to take a commanding, 3-1 lead. Benjamin Sigouin's singles win at No. 2 singles kept the Tar Heels alive for a late rally.
Carolina roared to three consecutive singles matches to finish the match. Logan Zapp started the rally with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over No. 101 Robin Catry at No. 4 singles. Brian Cernoch, ranked No. 33, then topped No. 116 Rafa Izquierdo at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.
Peter Murphy clinched the team victory with a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Fons Van Sambeek.
Carolina finished the regular season with a 14-7 overall record, 9-3 in the ACC. UNC finished the regular season by winning six of its last seven matches and eight of its last 10. NC State fell to 17-8, 6-6.
The Tar Heels and Wolfpack could meet again next weekend on Friday. Sunday's win clinched the No. 3 seed and a double bye to the quarterfinals in the tournament for UNC. Carolina will play either No. 6 seed NCSU or No. 11 seed Virginia Tech on Friday at 12:30 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
