VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore right-hander Gabe Driscoll fanned a school-record 15 hitters in a masterful performance to lead Binghamton baseball (7-18, 4-7 America East) to a 9-2 win over visiting Hartford (3-20, 2-9 AE) Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Baseball Stadium.

Driscoll (W, 1-0) broke the single-game strikeout record of 14 held by Hall of Famer Zach Groh, who also set his mark against Hartford 15 years ago (April 27, 2007). Driscoll allowed just two hits - both first-inning singles - before shutting down the Hawks for his remaining seven innings. At one point, he retired 12 straight batters. Driscoll went 8.0 IP and threw 117 pitches in the longest career outing. He struck out the side in the second, added two in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, two in the seventh and the final two in the eighth. He retired the side in order in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Bearcats' offense meanwhile, erased an early 1-0 Hartford lead with four runs in the second, two more in the third and finished the scoring with three insurance runs in the eighth. Binghamton plated four of its runs with two-out hits.

Junior left fielder Cavan Tully went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI and freshman second baseman Nick Roselli went 4-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman DH Evin Sullivan belted his first collegiate home run - a towering two-run shot in the eighth.

Down 1-0, BU scored four runs on just two hits in the fourth. The big blow was a two-out, bases-clearing double to the wall in right center by Tully. In the third, BU added two more runs on RBIs by sophomore catcher Kevin Reilly and senior shortstop Jake Evans, who returned to the lineup after missing 10 games with an injury.

In the eighth, the Bearcats closed out the scoring with three more runs. Junior first baseman Connor Aoki belted an RBI double into the left field corner and Sullivan followed by ripping a first-pitch offering high over the wall in left field. Aoki, incredibly, was back in the lineup a day after taking a pitch to the face in a scary second-inning scene.

The teams conclude their three-game set at 1 p.m. Sunday with BU already assured of winning its first conference series of the spring.
