Grand County residents have already spent more than 50,000 minutes reading this summer as part of the Grand County Public Library’s summer reading challenge for all ages.
When our community’s total minutes read reached 50,000 minutes City Market and Moonflower Market each committed to donating $500 to the Grand County Food Bank.
Grand County Public Library has now challenged the community to reach a new goal of 225,000 total minutes of reading, according to Adrea Lund, the library’s head of Children and Teen Services.
“On the day that goal is reached, all youth who are registered for the library’s summer challenge will receive a coupon for a free doughnut from The Donut Shop on Center Street,” she said. “It’s not too late to earn awesome reading rewards this summer. Visit tinyurl.com/gcpl2020 to register.
Every year Grand County Public Library offers summer programs to encourage summer reading and help prevent Grand County students’ summer slide (the loss of reading skills over the summer), said Lund in an email.
This summer, due to COVID-19, the Grand County Library received a grant from the Utah State Library Division and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to offer an online summer reading challenge called Imagine Your [Story. This](//Story. This) summer, for the first time, parents (and adults without children) are able to report the minutes they and their family members spend reading and the Imagine Your Story activities they complete using an app on their phone or our new summer challenge website.
“Our new online platform also offers a wonderful new opportunity to encourage summer reading,” Lund said. “It has the ability to set and track community wide reading goals. The platform keeps and shares up-to-date information on the total number of minutes read by the entire community.”
Food Bank Manager Drake Taylor said he appreciated the donations, as well as donations from individuals and businesses amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This means more food for our clients,” he said. “COVID made donations go up (in general). We’re experiencing an increase in community giving unlike anything I’ve seen since I came here.”
