NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio

OVI: Clague Road

An officer early June 14 spotted a woman standing in the street on Clague Road just south of Lorain Road.

The woman flagged down the officer and said the man in the vehicle next to her car was passed out behind the wheel and did not awaken when she knocked on his window.

The officer noticed that the male driver’s eyes were closed, his head was tilted back and his car was still in drive. The officer also failed to awaken the man by knocking on the window, so he parked his cruiser in front of the man’s car to prevent it from moving.

Using a lockout kit, police managed to open the passenger’s side door, put the car in park and awaken the driver. The driver smelled of an alcoholic beverage and admitted drinking, but he didn’t say how much.

After officers administered a field sobriety test, they arrested the man for operating a vehicle while impaired. A breath test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.134.

Officers also found a 40-caliber handgun in the car with a round in the chamber.

Officers charged the man with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having a BAC above 0.08 and improper handling of a firearm.

The suspect told police he should have taken an Uber home instead of driving, according to a police report.

OVI: Columbia Road

An officer at 12:39 a.m. June 20 stopped a car for multiple marked-lanes violations and speeding on Columbia Road near Rose Road.

The officer had spotted the car apparently strike a curb on Columbia near Lorain Road. The vehicle also was weaving and crossed a double yellow line. The officer reported that the car was traveling 48 mph in a 35 mph zone.

After the officer stopped the car as it turned from Columbia onto Rose, the officer smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage on the driver. When the officer asked the driver how much he had had to drink, the man replied “a lot,” according to a police report. His eyes were glassy and his speech was slurred, according to the officer.

An inspection of the man’s car revealed that the right rear tire had a hole in the side and that the tire was flat.

Officers administered a field sobriety test, but the man refused to take a breath test to determine his blood-alcohol level, according to police.

Officers charged the suspect with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, refusal to take an alcohol test, failing to drive within marked lanes and speeding.
