California's behind-the-wheel driver's tests to resume Friday: What you need to know - San Francisco Chronicle

Starting Friday, you can again get behind the wheel for an in-person driving test in California - with new pandemic health procedures in place.

The Department of Motor Vehicles said Tuesday that it will resume the tests, which it suspended in mid-March because of the coronavirus outbreak. All first-time driver’s license holders and commercial license applicants are required to complete the test with an examiner.

The DMV said that it will automatically reschedule all canceled appointments over the next several weeks. When they are completed, the agency will schedule new testing appointments.

“I’m asking for everyone’s patience as we safely clear the backlog of behind-the-wheel drive test appointments,” DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a statement.

The agency is adding several health and safety protocols, including:

All applicants must wear face coverings and complete a series of screening questions before taking the test.

• At the outset, temperature checks will be required for applicants in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. Over the next several weeks, the requirement will be added statewide.

• Applicants with expired permits must fill out a new online application in advance, and check in 30 minutes before their appointment.

• Examiners will wear protective face coverings and gloves, and put plastic covers on the passenger seat and floorboard of the test vehicle.

• Examiners will conduct more of the appointment outside the vehicle, including pre-test instructions.

• During the test, a minimum of two windows must be lowered.

To streamline the appointments, the DMV said it is making changes including shortening the driving route in many areas. It is also adding examiners and expanding testing hours, including Saturday service in some locations.

While all 169 field offices have reopened for transactions that require an in-person visit, the DMV still advises customers to go online for services such as driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals.
