RAPID CITY, S.D. — In the spring, there is an increase in animals being born, and while adorable and cuddly, they are rarely if ever, in need of human help.

It isn’t rare to find baby birds, fawn, and other woodland creatures who appear to be alone and in danger, but that is oftentimes not the case.

“It’s that time of year again where we’re gonna see a lot of baby animals,” said Tanner Bruns, a Conservation Officer of the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks. “You’ll see them out and about, and you might think that the mom has abandoned them or the mom’s gone, but she’s most likely just kinda out wandering around. She left the baby somewhere that she felt it was safe so she could go out and eat, or do whatever she needed to do.”

Officials agree that it is best to let nature take it’s course, and to leave wildlife be. Infant animals are usually born with very little scent to protect them from predators.

Touching and picking the animals up can attract danger, for not only themselves, but nearby infant animals. Feeding wildlife is also largely discouraged.

“When it comes to feed wildlife, you know, it’s not a good idea to feed things such as ducks, or geese, or really any wildlife,” Bruns said. “That makes them dependent on humans, it could also make them come closer to humans and not be scared of them, and that’s their natural instinct.

Rapid City also has a city wide ordinance against feeding the ducks and the birds. Their digestive systems are not accustomed to human food and for best practices observe from a distance, and remember, if you care, leave it there.
