The why behind the color pink in Parrish - Bay News 9

The Parrish football team has worn pink during the month of October to recognize breast cancer awareness month.

Head football coach Chris Coulton wanted his players to know why the color is worn during the month by sports teams all over the country.  He had good reason to do more than just let his team wear the color.

Four years ago, Coach Coulton was diagnosed with bladder cancer, but fortunately it was caught early and removed through surgery. He wanted his team to understand the month is about more than a color.

"Pink is just a color, it’s a spotlight, you’re shining a spotlight on something, your not doing anything to kill cancer," Coulton said.

So the head coach decided to do something about it.

Coulton had one of the team moms post on Facebook that they were looking for a cancer survivor to talk to the varsity football team about the meaning behind the color, and they found Emily Rhoads.

"It was really cool when I talked to Coach Coulton his message was different," said Emily.  "He didn’t just want to have his kids wear pink and parade me around and say hey this is a cancer survivor and send me on my way, he really wanted me to help make a difference and impact to these kids."

Three years ago, Emily Rhoads was diagnosed with Stage 3 triple negative breast cancer, which led to a bi-lateral mastectomy. She has been cancer-free now for over two years.  Coach Coulton wanted her to share her story with his team.

Coach Coulton said after they heard Emily's story, it really hit home, and his team went to work.

"I would have never expected teenage boys to come up with regarding this topic so it was really heart warming to see that they really took it too heart," Rhoads remarked.

What happened after that meeting blew Coulton away.  His young Bulls not only took Emily’s message to heart, they went out and did something about it.

The team raised over nine hundred dollars in less than two weeks.  It blew Coulton away.

Last season Emily was presented with a check during a Bulls home game, and that, was just the beginning.

At the beginning of this season, the boys asked Coulton if they could wear pink again, and raise money for cancer awareness.

This years the Bulls almost doubled their total from that first check last season, and in the process learned a valuable life lesson.

"I hope this is not the end of anything, I hope this is the start of something, ya know, and I believe putting action behind the color is the way to go now," Coulton said.
