CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Local Craft Ale House in Cedar Rapids says it was on the verge of being another local restaurant closing this year until a Facebook post drummed them up a lot of business.

Owner Jason Wilkerson told us the last three weeks had been pretty rough and he tried everything, even converting servers into delivery drivers to drop off take out orders. Still, things were slow.

“It’s not just a business gone, it’s families without an income,” Wilkerson says. When a well-known local man named Joe Sample heard about the trouble the restaurant was in, he took to his social media. Sample let people on Facebook know the restaurant had hit it’s breaking point. Local Craft couldn’t hardly keep up with the response.

“I’m telling you Monday night as soon as we hung up the phone it was ringing again. It was the same last night,” says Wilkerson.

In a Facebook post of their own the restaurant called Joe Sample their hero.

“For him to say that I appreciate it but like I said it’s Cedar Rapids that has stepped up to the plate and has really shown themselves that they’re here to support local restaurants,” Sample says.

“If it weren’t for him, if this week was like the last three, I don’t know if this interview would be about how great things have been the last two days. It might be another local business is going away,” Wilkerson says.

Sample hopes people continue to support all of the local restaurants, especially during the pandemic.

“Maybe instead of going out twice a week, go out three times a week,” Sample told us.

Local Craft says the best way they can describe this week is 0 to 100.

“It’s Thanksgiving tomorrow and what better way can I be thankful than for the entire community to rally around my business and my family,” Wilkerson says.

He tells us he’s feeling the love from other area restaurants and bars as well. The Blind Pig up the street ordered food from Local Craft the other day to feed their staff, and you can order Local Craft food from Tailgators while enjoying their venue and bar.
