Volunteers at the local nonprofit ‘Feed my Sheep’ were busy Wednesday morning fixing up their annual Thanksgiving lunch.
Five days a week, Feed my Sheep dishes out hot meals to the less fortunate or homebound in the Gulfport area. However, the pandemic caused some slight shifts in their line.
They had to close down their dinner room and expand their hours as well as increase their output. Last month alone they dished out 17,000 meals, that’s a 7,000 meal increase from October 2019.
Volunteer of the Year for 2019 Merle Johnson helps at least three times a week. She shares with News 25 that her time at Feed my Sheep is extremely rewarding and encourages others to donate their time. “There’s a lot you can do. We have people come in here and volunteer, might want to clean the bathrooms. That’s when the dining room was open, sweep up, mop, help in the kitchen, help with the food and stuff, go into their warehouse and unload. There’s a lot of different things you can do. You don’t have to have money.”
