1. Feed citrus trees once again. Mature citrus trees need a yearly total of 1.6 pounds of actual nitrogen fertilizer, divided into four equal portions applied in late January, early March, late April and early June – about six weeks apart – and distributed around the drip line. Since one pound of any dry fertilizer equals about two cups, that is about four cups of ammonium sulfate, two overflowing cups of ammonium nitrate, or 1.5 cups of urea, each time you apply it. Be sure to water it in well.

2. Avocado trees need their second semi-annual feeding within the next couple of weeks – half a pound of actual nitrogen per tree. That means about 2.5 pounds (5 cups) of ammonium sulfate per mature tree. Or 1.5 pounds (3 cups) of ammonium nitrate per mature tree. Scatter it away from the trunk, near the outer edge of the leaf canopy, and water it in thoroughly.

3. As the weather becomes warmer and drier, be sure to water most fruiting and flowering garden plants carefully and regularly. However, this is also the time to taper off on the irrigation of California natives and other drought-tolerant plants.

4. Harvest and enjoy summer vegetables as they mature. This will also encourage additional flowering for later harvests. If squashes are blooming but haven’t started to set, you can make that happen quickly. Notice that female squash flowers have baby squashes at the base, and pollen-bearing male blossoms arise on plain stems. Early in the morning brush some of that pollen from the male flowers onto the center of the freshly opened female flowers. In a few days your squashes will be ready to pick.

5. Prune overgrown junipers, but be careful not to hedge-sheer them. They’ll look more natural and attractive if you select branches that stick out too far and trim them back to their starting point, being careful not to leave stumps. Trim out dead twigs inside, and shorten others – stem by stem – only as needed to balance the plant. This will result in a natural, unclipped appearance, and summer growth will be more evenly distributed.
