MADISON (WKOW) -- Trash littered part of frozen Lake Mendota Sunday near the UW-Madison campus.

Madison police tell 27 News they got some complaints Saturday of a large group out on the ice, going onto private property.

Police did not have an estimate on the size of the group, but public social media posts show a dozens of people were standing on the ice together.

Officers responded to the complaints, telling the group to stay off the private property, according to police officials.

James Tye, executive director of the Clean Lakes Alliance, tells 27 News the organization, "encourages all lake users to keep the land and ice clear of debris and trash. Anything left on the land or ice will eventually end up in the water; which can cause harm to people, pets, and aquatic life”.
