COLLINSVILLE — For Alannah Nelson, starting her own business is nothing new.
The senior at Father McGivney Catholic High School is on business number two so far.
“I donate 50 meals to people in need for every item I sell,” she explains on her website, Feed Fifty Apparel. “These meals are donated through an amazing organization called Feeding America. It has 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provide food and services to people each year.
“I researched many different charities; that was important,” she told an Intelligencer reporter. It was also important to Alannah that the charity be legitimate and local; Feeding America qualified on both counts. She said she wanted to create a business that changes the world with every single item she sells.
“I read about how one in six people struggle with hunger and I wanted to help,” she said.
As of Thursday, she has sold 15 garments, which translates to 750 meals donated. She said she would like to get 1,000 meals donated. Apparel available for purchase currently comprises a black, short-sleeved T-shirt and a black hooded sweatshirt, both with logos. Alannah said she plans on expanding her garments’ color palette but she hasn’t decided on how many or which colors to offer. Her mother, Melissa, suggested making an online poll of potential color choices and see how customers vote. Tie-dye clothes and customizable logos may be in the offing, too.
“Right now, I am in a program for high school seniors called CEO (Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities), where each student starts their own business with some leadership and help from mentors,” she explains on her website. “I always wanted to start a business that helps others and makes the world a better place, and Feed Fifty Apparel is exactly that.
Nelson has not graduated yet but she is already set for college. As a Meridian Scholarship winner, she received a full-ride scholarship to SIUE in the fall, where she plans to major in business and later, start her own charity.
“I have always been interested in business,” she said. “From selling cupcakes to my family as a kid, starting a reselling business on Poshmark as a sophomore in high school, and now starting my very own apparel company, I have always loved having my own business.”

“I know world hunger is a huge problem to try to tackle, but with your help, together we can make a difference,” Nelson said.
