LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Tensions were high June 1 at West Broadway and South 26th Street.

Demonstrators filled all four corners of the intersection. It was clear that it wouldn’t take much to turn the peaceful protest into something else.

Many of the people on the street were carrying firearms. One demonstrator told me, “We’re tired of being slaughtered,” indicating he was prepared to exchange gunfire with law enforcement if the time came.

There was a sentiment shared by others who wanted to defend their neighborhood and protect their friends and family.

Shortly after 8 p.m., a group of protesters marching from Jefferson Square appeared in the distance as they advanced westward on Broadway. The tension melted.

The crowds from the intersection rushed to greet the marchers. People were hugging, dancing and cheering in the streets.

Toward the front of the group were a few members of the Louisville Metro Police Department, including Sgt. Michael Jackson. Protesters were rushing to greet Jackson and other officers who joined the march.

Chris Buntin, who said he has family members in law enforcement, went up to thank Jackson for marching with the group, saying it showed a great deal of respect and understanding of the situation.

Many people were overcome with emotions and could be seen wiping tears from their eyes.

At that moment, everyone was celebrating peace and progress.
