A line of dangerous storms blasting across New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon has ripped down trees and left tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power.

A video from Haddonfield shows two cars crushed by a large tree that came down on the vehicles. Cars were also damaged in Riverton, among other places.

Meanwhile, several large trees were ripped out of the ground in Medford, photos on Twitter show.

The National Weather Service reported one thunderstorm wind gust as strong as 89 mph at 1:22 p.m., about 2 miles southwest of Beach Haven in Ocean County, and a gust of 87 mph in Brick Township, also in Ocean County. That’s the strength of a Category 1 hurricane’s sustained winds.

Some permanent structures might suffer damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles.

A second round of storms later Wednesday afternoon and evening is also expected to pack a punch.

The storms are being fed by humid air and hot summer-like temperatures as a cold front moves in from the west and pushes out a warm front that brought showers and thunderstorms Wednesday morning.
