A beloved Thanksgiving morning tradition is back. Run to Feed the Hungry had to be held virtually last year due to COVID-19, but this year on Nov. 25 you can lace up your walking and running shoes and pound the streets of East Sacramento and midtown, all while raising money for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. “This event raises critical funds for our organization to be able to feed our community throughout the year,” says Melanie Flood, director of communications for Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.
The event, celebrating its 28th year, starts at the entrance of Sacramento State on J Street and winds through East Sacramento for the 5K run/walk; the 10K course takes you into midtown. A post-race celebration takes place at Scottish Rite Masonic Center on H Street.
Sacramento, it seems, is ready to run (and walk). Nearly 600 people signed up during the first week registration was open.
Lest you think that Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services is turning a blind eye to the still roaring concerns of COVID, worry not. “We are closely monitoring local official and CDC guidelines. Any requirements set out by them will be closely followed,” says Flood. “The safety of our community is our top priority.”
Out of town on turkey day, in charge of the big meal or simply not feeling the whole crowd thing? You can still support the SFBFS by registering as a virtual participant. “Our fundraising goal this year is $200,000,” says Flood. “We are challenging our community to go all-in for Sacramento and help us reach our target! All funds will go to feed our community.”
For more information, go to runtofeedthehungry.com. Early bird registration ends Nov. 18, but you can sign up as late as the morning of the event.
