WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – It’s a food drive of a different sort.
The state Department of Agriculture says as many as 100,000 dairy cows in Whatcom and Skagit Counties are at risk of running short of feed because of the recent flooding.
Fred Likkel with Whatcom Family Farmers says the supply chain is broken.
“One of the key feed rooms that supplies grain to folks has three feet of water in it. It has been down,” says Likkel. “It’s just created a lot of challenges in getting feed to these animals so they have proper care and nutrition.”
He says they need drivers and specialized trucks and equipment to help get grain to the animals.
If you can help as a driver, contact Jason Hoekstra, CEO of EPL Feed at his cell 910-360-7833 or email JasonH@EPLFeed.com.
Cash donations to help the effort can also be made with the Washington State Dairy Federation.
Checks can be written to Dairy Federation, with “emergency fund” as a note on the check. Mail to P.O. Box 1768, Elma, WA 98541.
You can listen to the full interview with Likkel on our Podcast page.
