Sunday's Minnesota Vikings-San Francisco 49ers game was, for the most part, an entertaining battle between two fringe playoff teams. The second half in particular featured plenty of fireworks, with both squads trading touchdowns.
Minnesota's best shot at tying things up (or at least getting to within a field goal) came early in the fourth quarter, during a lengthy 12-play, six-minute drive. The Vikings marched down the field, then got stuffed on first, second and third down from inside the 6-yard line.
After their incomplete pass on third down, the Vikings decided to go for it. But the entire offense looked completely out of sorts. Players were running off, and onto, the field, clearly looking for the play call. Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins barked orders at the rest of his teammates, then lined up under center to snap the ball.
There was just one little problem: he was standing behind a guard, not the center.
Vikings running back Alexander Mattison noticed the impending snafu, and ran up to the line to shift Cousins over a spot. But the comedy of errors by Minnesota's offense had already killed any chance of actually snapping the ball, and Cousins — who still didn't look like he knew exactly where he was — had to burn an important timeout.
The Vikings ended up returning to the field, Cousins correctly received the football from his center, and then totally missed his star receiver Justin Jefferson on a pass attempt. From there, San Francisco chewed up more than seven minutes of clock and effectively ended the game. The Niners won 34-26 to improve to 6-5 overall. They'll get to enjoy a laid-back film session this week; the same cannot be said for the Vikings offense when they review the moment they really lost Sunday's game.
