FAIRFIELD — Trumbull senior Corbin Smith piled up four first-half touchdowns Friday night against Fairfield Warde, but in the mind of Eagles quarterback Hunter Agosti the biggest play Smith made came on a downfield block that set up a 45-yard score for teammate Justin Delaney late in the third quarter.
“The kid (Smith) scores five touchdowns a game, but he cares if anyone else scores too, he wants everyone to get a piece of the pie,” Agosti said. “It says something about his character. When you’re that big of a superstar and you care more about your team than yourself it says a lot.”
The offensive prowess of Smith and Agosti — coupled with a stout Eagles defense — proved more than enough for Trumbull in its 42-6 victory at Tetreau Davis Field.
“Every week we’re grinding,” Smith said. “When we fix our mistakes we’re a really good team.”
Friday’s win upped Trumbull’s record to 5-2 and kept the Eagles in the hunt for a Class LL playoff berth. The victory also erased a lot of the bad taste from last week’s 44-12 loss to Greenwich.
“I’m proud of the way our kids bounced back from last week,” Trumbull coach Marce Petroccio said. “We were clicking on all cylinders (in the first quarter).”
Trumbull travels to Ridgefield next week then hosts Danbury before closing the season with crosstown rival and No. 2 in the GameTimeCT Poll St. Joseph on Thanksgiving.
“We know we control this season still,” Agosti said. “We don’t have to hope on anything. We need to win games.”
Agosti threw for 248 yards and four touchdowns. Eagles’ tight end Ben Carley caught five passes for 82 yards. Nicholas Tuccinardi complemented the Trumbull offense with solid running throughout.
“We have so many weapons, they just get open and make plays,” Agosti said.
Of course, the top weapon Friday proved to be Smith. He took a pair of short passes from Agosti and turned them into equally impressive 41-yard touchdowns.
Smith also posted four touchdown performances this season in wins over Shelton and Westhill.
“You just get (Smith) the ball and there’s always a chance something happens,” Agosti said.
Smith helped put the game away early, scoring on a seven yard run on the Eagles’ first possession. Less than two minutes later Agosti found Owen Solano up the right sideline for a 16-yard score and a 14-0 Trumbull lead.
“They played a smart, solid game. Their defense really answered the bell,” Warde coach Duncan DellaVolpe said. “I’m assuming they’re probably not happy with their last game and that was one of their focus points and they did a number on us tonight.”
Trumbull extended its lead to 35-0 before a 20-yard touchdown run by Christopher Silk put Warde on the scoreboard before halftime.
The Mustangs dropped to 1-5.
