DK Metcalf needs to see even more of the ball going forward.
While the third-year receiver is leading the team in targets this year with 45 (Tyler Lockett is second, with 42), it hasn’t translated to dominance in the passing game. Metcalf has broken 100 yards in a game just once this season, and hasn’t had more than six catches in any game. In 2020, when DK Metcalf had seven or more receptions, he broke 100 yards receiving all three times.
This lack of receptions isn’t for lack of effectiveness with the ball in his hands; disregarding the late blunder against the Steelers last Sunday, Metcalf has done well after the catch, producing memorable moments like this juke against the Rams on Thursday Night Football.
In fact, when targeted, DK Metcalf is giving the Seahawks quarterback, whether it be Russell Wilson or Geno Smith, the second-highest passer rating produced by any receiver in the NFL, per Pro Football Focus.
That season statline: 31/45 for 441 yards and 5 touchdowns, 0 interceptions.
Against the Saints this Monday, Shane Waldron needs to do even more to get the ball in DK Metcalf’s hands. Geno Smith clearly prefers Metcalf over Lockett, so it’s important that Waldron continues to take advantage of that preference moving forward.
