The touchdown didn’t count, but the play may be the most-watched of any this football season in the Bay Area.
When Nicho Domine fielded a low snap on a punt early on in Bellarmine’s eventual win over San Benito, all he was trying to do was salvage a few yards out of a broken play, the senior told this news organization. By the end of it, Domine was in the end zone at the opposite end of the field and the highlight had been seen more than 250,000 times.
Viewers of the 25-second clip saw Domine shake one defender, then another, spin, juke left, juke right and eventually, improbably, break free and score for the Bells. The highlight garnered the attention of former NFL punter Pat McAfee, who is now a sports radio host and shared the clip with his 2 million followers on social media. The only problem? The touchdown was called back on a controversial penalty.

“I was already in the end zone and celebrating and after, I see the flag was thrown, I’m like, ‘Come on, this is the worst time for that to happen,'” remembered Domine, who along with coach Jalal Beauchman said he disagreed with the block-in-the-back flag.
One thing viewers were right about: this kid does a lot more than punt.
“I’ve had a couple times where I’ve broken some tackles, so (my teammates) assumed something could happen,” Domine said.
Up until this weekend, this senior was more likely to be returning kicks and punts than serving them up. Domine also plays running back and safety for Bellarmine but was called on to punt after an injury to sophomore Jack Raney, who normally handles the Bells’ special-teams duties.
Domine also captains the school’s rugby squad and said his dad and two brothers played the sport.
“I always knew he was a talented athlete,” Beauchman said. “He’s just really one of those guys that does everything very well. … That was an amazing play for anyone to make. It’s surprising, but I think a lot of this young man.”
On a separate play with a clean snap, Domine booted the ball 75 yards in the air, Beauchman said.
In the box score, Domine is credited with five punts for 165 yards and five punt returns for 43 yards. He also rushed twice for 17 yards, caught three passes for 21 yards and made all five extra-point attempts.
Is there new competition for starting punter?
“When you do something like that, it opens the coaching staff’s eyes,” Beauchman said. “There’s always competition at every position, but I would say there might be a competition at the punting position.”
