Lancaster County authorities are continuing to investigate the death of a 59-year-old man whose body was found earlier this month behind a local Target.
Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni told LancasterOnline the man has been identified as Warwick Township resident Gene Lamar Engle Jr.
Engle’s death is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious at this time, according to the LancasterOnline report. An official cause of death is pending tissue and toxicology results.
An employee of the Target off Route 30 in East Lampeter Township found Engle’s body while they were disposing of trash, authorities said.
Tina Zartman, Engle’s sister, paid tribute to her brother in an interview with the news outlet. She told LancasterOnline that as soon as she saw the reports of human remains found behind the East Lampeter Township store, she knew it was Engle.
Although he struggled with drug addiction for years, Zartman said Engle was a very intelligent and artistic man.
“He knew about so many factual things that I couldn’t even comprehend,” Zartman said in the LancasterOnline interview. “He just — he was very talented.”
Engle and Zartman last saw one another last summer, when he beat COVID-19 and pneumonia and emerged from the hospital vowing to get clean and become a barber, according to LancasterOnline.
Zartman and the rest of her family had reportedly not talked to Engle in the ensuing months, and were unaware of his whereabouts. She told LancasterOnline they are not sure what led to Engle’s death.
“With all his problems and struggles, we always loved him, and we always had hope for him,” Zartman said. “That’s all.”
