You won’t find creations by the featured artists in “Rituals,” ArtReach St. Croix’s Mobile Art Gallery exhibit, this summer.
Instead, you’ll find pieces of what’s behind their creations — a coffee mug, a rug, a grandmother’s clock. In “Rituals,” which is subtitled “Stories and objects from artists’ daily routines,” the 20 artists in the exhibit share bits from their lives.
Oh, and you won’t find this exhibit in a typical gallery or museum. “Rituals” is displayed in a trailer that will be parked in parks throughout the summer: Lake Elmo Park Reserve, Afton State Park, William O’Brien State Park and Interstate Park-MN. (It also spends a couple of days at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis at the end of the parks tour.)
Some of the objects are very small, says William Franklin, an independent art curator and educator who conceived and curated “Rituals.” Each object – “something they almost depend on to start their day,” Franklin says – is displayed with a story from the artist and a photo of their studio.
Artist Jocelyn Suzuka, who makes dolls that reflect her Japanese heritage, shares a view of her kitchen: “Poke, pull. Poke, pull. Poke, pull. Knot. This was my rhythm for 2020: the beat of a needle puncturing fabric. Outside, rain pattered; cicadas buzzed; sirens blared and snow fell silently on hardened pavement. I heard this through the kitchen window of my south Minneapolis apartment.”
Artist Christopher Atkins shares his sleep routine: “Over the years I’ve learned that a sleep ritual, which starts hours before going to bed, helps me sleep better, wake up less during the night and helps keep ‘the Sunday Scaries’ and upcoming tasks from interfering with my rest … only read paper books or magazines while in bed.”
Inside the trailer, which is “almost like an altar,” Franklin says, he has arranged the pieces on pedestals and in frames. The stories from the artists are numbered and their names are repeated in audio that plays inside the trailer. Collaborator photographer Lauren Bína took the photos of the studios.
The look into artist rituals and their studio space gives “Rituals” and anthropological component, according to Franklin.
Placing the trailer in a nature setting enhances the experience, the curator adds. Signs will direct visitors to the location in each park. The trailer expands and unfolds and is powered by a solar panel.
The mobile gallery has been making the summertime rounds in the St. Croix valley for three or four years, Franklin says. This is his second year curating the show. Last year’s exhibit, “Mending,” brought together work dealing with the anxiety of the coronavirus pandemic, the death of George Floyd and even brokenness from personal tragedies. Appointments were needed for last summer’s show, but not necessary this summer.
Artists featured in “Rituals” are Silvana Agostoni, Bo Young An, Christopher Atkins, Zoe Cinel, Chris Cunningham, Deja Day, Sophie Donahue, Susan Fink, Alondra Marisol Garza, Figen Haugen, Ken Johnson, Whitney McLaughlin, Amy Crickenberger Oeth, Dougie Padilla, Carol Patt, Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, Sue Rowe, Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo, Jocelyn Suzuka, and Nese Yurttas.
