COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Strauss Mann returned to the blue paint in style with 18 saves and a shutout as the University of Michigan ice hockey team followed up a tough Friday loss with a resounding 6-0 win over the Ohio State on Saturday evening (Feb. 20) at Value City Arena.
With the win, the Wolverines notched a weekend split and secured the season series against OSU, 3-1. They also moved into a third-place tie with Notre Dame in the Big Ten standings (29 points)
The shutout, Mann's 10th as a Wolverine, moved the junior netminder into a tie for fourth place all-time in Michigan hockey history with Shawn Hunwick (2007-12).
Penalties were the story throughout the first period, as an array of whistles slowed down play and gave each side multiple opportunities with the man-advantage. Following a scoreless 20 minutes that saw each side go 0-for-2 on the power play, Michigan (12-8-0, 10-8-0-1 Big Ten) led the Buckeyes in shots (5-2), but each side continued to search for the icebreaker.
Coming out for the second period with an extra push, the Wolverines quickly worked to pull ahead. A little more than one minute into the middle stanza, Brendan Brisson opened the scoring with a tap-in goal from the doorstep following a phenomenal give-and-go on a rush with classmate Thomas Bordeleau. Michael Pastujov picked up the secondary assist.
At 4:06 for the second period, head coach Mel Pearson challenged a high hit in front of the U-M bench on Brisson that had gone uncalled. After entering the penalty box for an official review, the officials determined that there had been a penalty and assessed a five-minute major to an OSU skater for contact to the head.
On the ensuing five-minute power play, Dakota Raabe buried a one-timer from an open flank on the right wing. Brisson and Bordeleau assisted on Raabe's first tally of the season to put U-M ahead, 2-0.
Minutes later, after killing off another minor penalty of their own, Michigan broke into the OSU zone. Alternate captain Jimmy Lambert skated in and took a shot from inside the half-wall that skittered through the netminder's wickets to trickle in front of a wide-open cage. Captain Jack Becker wasted no time before pouncing on the rebound and sending it home for a 3-0 lead. Keaton Pehrson also picked up a helper on Becker's goal.
Shortly thereafter, the offensive onslaught continued with U-M applying more pressure in the Ohio State end. After an initial Wolverine shot was blocked away toward the slot, Bordeleau sauntered up to the loose puck and placed a wrist shot top-shelf over the goalie's shoulder to stretch the lead to 4-0. Blueliner Cam York picked up the primary assist while Brisson collected his third point of the night with the secondary helper.
After a four-goal outburst in the second period, Michigan took a 4-0 lead into the dressing room at the second intermission.
U-M renewed its offensive drive when the puck dropped with a new goaltender in net for Ohio State (6-15-1, 6-14-0-0 Big Ten). Tempers flared at times throughout the night, but a mid-period set of coincidental minor penalties was as far as extracurriculars went.
With the teams back playing five-on-five, Eric Ciccolini collected a pass from Lambert before moving in toward the goalmouth and ripping a short-side wrist shot from the dot that beat OSU's backup netminder to extend the U-M lead to 5-0. Nick Blankenburg picked up the secondary assist on Ciccolini's goal with 7:38 remaining.
Just 1:45 later, Bordeleau stunned OSU with a beautiful dangle to backhand goal combination that pushed the lead to 6-0. The goal was Bordeleau's fourth point of the night, a new career-high for the freshman forward. With Brisson pushing the puck ahead to Bordeleau along the boards, he recorded his four-point game.
In all, 10 Wolverines recorded points as the team bounced back to put on an offensive and defensive clinic on the road. Next week, Michigan returns to Yost Ice Arena for a non-conference series against Arizona State. The games are scheduled for Friday and Saturday (Feb. 26-27), with opening puck drops set for 7 p.m. each night.
