EAU CLAIRE (WQOW)- In under ten minutes, a blob of clay turns into a bowl. After hours of drying and glazing, that bowl turns into an artistic piece. And for Feed My People's Empty Bowls fundraiser, one piece sold turns into four meals for a hungry family, so Dan Ogan and Sue McIntyre made 575 of them, more than they've ever made for the event.

"I said let's go to 200, but that came pretty easily," Ogan said. "Then it was fifty more, and fifty more, and fifty more until then I finally said let's do 500."

The annual fundraiser is the food bank's largest event with bowls available for purchase and auction to help those who need food assistance. The event is virtual this year, which sparked Sue and Dan to craft the bowls as the need for food grows during the pandemic.

"$1,000 will provide 4,000 meals, and the 500 bowls we made at $20 a piece is $10,000, so that's going to be 40,000 meals," Ogan said.

"We've probably invested $1,000 each, and that's going to bring so much more to Feed My People," McIntyre said.

The two delivered roughly 250 of the bowls to the food bank Thursday, where employees met them with gratitude.

"We had to start thinking about what Empty Bowls was going to look like over six months ago," said Susie Haugley, communications specialist for Feed My People. "There were a lot of question marks, but they've totally stepped up to the plate, and every single bowl is unique and beautiful, and it's just amazing that they did that on their own."

Both retired educators, Sue and Dan say pottery has become a fun hobby for them in recent years, and they hope to make even more bowls for next year's fundraiser.

"This is really an important activity that we can do in our retirement," McIntyre said. "We have the time and we have resources, and so it's a great contribution that we can make."

"I've given enough bowls to my friends, they don't need anymore bowls," Ogan said. "But I'm going to continue to make things, so I'll give it to a good cause."

The Empty Bowls fundraiser will run virtually from March 1-6, with tickets to purchase bowls available online. Unfortunately there won't be any soup to eat this year, but some of the tickets can be used to purchase bowls along with small gifts, including soup recipes from area chefs. Haugley says after three days of ticket sales, more tickets have been sold for the virtual event that last year's entire fundraiser.
