MABANK–Faith at Work Ministries, Feed the Hungry and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit partnered together in a food distribution event Nov. 9 at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Mabank.
With no questions asked, food packages were handed out to the needy, options to meet local counselors, churches, clothing banks, food banks or shelters to get other assistance were also available to those who came for a meal or food distribution box.
Both ministries have served the community in numerous ways over the years most recently receiving the backing of the City of Mabank, who suggested they join forces for a joint project.
Faith at Work Ministries gathers at the Mabank Pavilion every Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for Speak Life church service. Cars start lining up well before the 10 a.m. service time for the 11:45 a.m. food distribution although church attendance is not required.
The families that attend, are not rushed through the distribution and each one is given the time that they need to be seen and heard. The pastor spends time with each time offering prayer and ministering to any needs the family may have.
In 2017, Pastor Ken Davis had the idea for a food pantry while driving in his car. He said the Lord spoke to his heart asking him to feed his sheep. It began small, beginning in a closet only able to feed one family. Then it progressed to a laundry room where they could feed three families. It’s progressively grown from there. Faith at Work Ministries has left the closet and laundry room behind opting for a temporary warehouse to accommodate their needs.
Feed the Hungry and Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has been a prominent assistance force since 2015. Dickey’s Owner of both the Rowlett and Mabank locations Guy New, saw a need after the 2015 tornado that hit Rowlett. New offered free food for local victims and first responders.
Dickey’s corporate office took notice and sent assistance which spawned the Feed the Hungry program. New’s program assists an average of 40 families at every event.
Classic Car Cruise In’s and Feed the Hungry fundraising events are frequently held to provide resources, awareness and free meals to those in need, including veterans.
Together the two ministries will build a food warehouse for the local community that they hope will serve as a resource for other area food pantries also. Fuel, truck maintenance and time are a food pantries largest cost. Currently they are in the beginning stages of fundraising for the $650,000 facility.
