With a disappointing ending to last week’s race now in the rear-view mirror, Justin Allgaier is looking forward to going to one of his favorite tracks in search of his first win of the season.
Allgaier will get two chances to get that win as part of the Drydene doubleheader weekend at Dover International Speedway.
As of late, Allgaier has been the most dominant driver in the Xfinity Series at the 1-mile oval. He is the only driver to finish in the top five in the last five races there, including a win in 2018.
"Dover has been one of those places that is just so much fun for me," said Allgaier, who has combined to lead 195 laps in the last five Dover races. "I would say in my career that between Bristol and Dover, two very similar racetracks albeit completely different sizes have both been very kind to me. A lot of that comes down to having good race cars. It’s got its nickname ‘the monster’ for a reason because it is a monster. But when you find comfort it’s one of the most awesome race tracks you go to."
Allgaier is currently seventh in the projected Playoff seedings with seven races remaining in the regular season. Five DNFs have hurt Allgaier’s points total, including one at Bristol after leading 156 laps.
"The hard part for us right now is we’ve had speed week-in and week-out," Allgaier said. "We’ve led a ton of laps. We’ve won a ton of stages. We’ve done all of the things that really that we need to do, you know, and things have not worked out for us at all."
One of those races that didn’t work out came last weekend at the Daytona Road Course when Allgaier was turned by AJ Allmendinger while running third with three laps to go. After the race, Allgaier had some words for Allmendinger on pit road.
"I think it’s hard to not get that emotion when you’re in those moments," Allgaier said. "Really at the end of the day, I yelled at AJ, and I was mad at AJ. I mean you can’t not be and he even said in his post-race interview that he made a mistake, but I should still be mad, right? Like just saying you’re sorry doesn’t fix it. But on the opposite end of that, I would say that, you know, probably the hard part was as frustrated as I was at AJ I probably wasn’t nearly as frustrated as I came off at him. I was just frustrated at the situation.
"Obviously I’ve known AJ for a long time. We raced around each other for a long time and it wasn’t a mistake I expected AJ to make at road course."
For the Dover weekend Allgaier will not be in his traditional red Brandt car as he will be sporting blue for the Future Farmers of America.
"Really cool what they do for our young people and I’m excited to carry the colors," Allgaier said. "The last time I carried their colors in a semi-primary form…we ran a car between the FFA, Brandt and 4H at Chicagoland. We actually won that race."
Motor Racing Network’s live coverage of Saturday and Sunday’s Xfinity Series Drydene 200 will start at 12 p.m. ET and 12:30 p.m. ET, respectively.
