The 95th annual Tom McNulty Memorial American Legion Coon Feed will not take place in 2021.
The event, which takes place annually on the last Saturday in January at Legion Post 196 in Delafield, was canceled over COVID-19 concerns.
"The event is as intimate an event as you can get," said Coon Feed chairman and Post 196 adjutant Mark Corgiat. "Ultimately, with the size of our post and the nature of what we do, it's a community event, and everybody pretty much sits together, and they stand at the bar together, and they sit at the tables together. Unfortunately, we don't have a country club-sized facility to host this event."
The Coon Feed attracts 300 to 350 people each year, Corgiat said.
"Because of the uniqueness of the event we get people from around the state as well as the United States, but ultimately it is an intimate community event," Corgiat said before the 94th annual event earlier this year.
The Coon Feed was started in the mid-1920s by Tom McNulty and some of his hunting friends. As the years went on, McNulty and his friends moved from the kitchen of the house to a garage.
The size of the group grew, and the Coon Feed became a fundraiser for youth athletics in Delafield. The Legion also is affiliated with Boy Scout Troop 49 out of Summit and gives a percentage of its profits for an individual Boy Scout's college education. This year the event raised moe than $6,000.
In addition to the contributions for youth groups, money is also donated to veterans programs to support homeless veterans, the VA Medical Center, prosthetic research and more.
The Coon Feed moved from the old city hall to Delafield's American Legion post in the 1950s.
"It is a disappointment, there's no question about it," Corgiat said. "We're looking forward to 2022."
