In the rush to pass quickly through airport security, wallets, phones and other personal items are placed in bins to be scanned by Transportation Security Administration agents. After going through a full body scanner or metal detector, personal items are gathered. Wallets and phones placed back in pockets, shoes stepped back into.
Amid this, change or a few dollars may fall from a traveler’s wallet into security bins and be left behind. And that money adds up quickly.
Nearly a million dollars was left behind at airports during fiscal 2019, according to a recent report released by Homeland Security Administrator David P. Pekoske. Specifically, $926,030.44, including $18,899.09 in foreign money.
Homeland Security is required to compile a report of total unclaimed money and how it is spent by the federal agency.
John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York saw the most unclaimed money left behind, totaling $98,110.00 during fiscal 2019.
In New England, amounts varied widely by airport.
At Boston Logan International Airport, unclaimed funds added up to $29,259.13.
Bradley International Airport, the second busiest airport in New England, saw a significant drop in funds left behind. The total amount of change and bills left in security bins was $4,056.66.
In Manchester, just over $1,000 was left behind at the regional airport and in Providence, change collected totaled $750.33 at T.F. Green Airport.
The federal report does not note change collected at Worcester Regional Airport but notes that unclaimed money is deposited and accounted for at hub airports.
