It’s Monday, Nov. 1, 2021, and a few weeks ago I mentioned Mahoning Matters 2.0, our initiative to review, remake and reaffirm our mission as a digital news site in the Mahoning Valley.
New things are coming, and as we finalize our plans, we want to hear from you. So drop me a line at mark@mahoningmatters.com and give me some feedback:
-
What are the things that you value most about Mahoning Matters? In other words, what are the things that keep you coming back?
-
What do you want to see more of?
-
What are the things we should stop doing?
-
If we could add one thing to Mahoning Matters that would guarantee that you’d become a member or financial supporter, what would that be?
We are grateful for all of you who took the time to answer us when we originally asked. Among the feedback:
-
“I'd like a real ‘letters to the editor’ section. Often I cringe reading the letters in the Sunday Vindicator, but I need to know what others are thinking!”
-
“Local news. I get my world and national news from other sources but count on MM to keep me up on what’s happening in this area. Also, you clearly listen to your readers, great if unusual.”
-
“Consider some more in-depth long-form pieces. I think in one of your columns, you said this was a part of the original focus but was (understandably) deemphasized in the face of a global pandemic. In any event, I think there's room for this in the Mahoning Valley and I don't see anyone else really stepping up to that plate.”
Hopefully that reader saw Justin Dennis’ terrific deep dive into complaints about the Mahoning County prosecutor’s office on Wednesday. That’s the type of journalism we want to be known for as we push into year No. 3.
Please drop me a note! Now let's go make today count!
Here's what you need to know about the Mahoning Valley today:
Mahoning Matters has been internally tracking COVID-19 metrics including new cases, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations each day for months.
However, we made a mistake reporting on COVID-19 deaths earlier this month. We explain how in our weekly roundup of coronavirus news and trends.

"This is needed. Transparency across all areas. The staff areas were gutted last year with remaining employees picking up 2-4 EXTRA departments. The job postings that are out there are hard to fill or folks don’t stay because of the lower than average starting pay. Yet there are areas still hiring from outside when there are qualified internal applicants that can be economically moved around."
— Jill Goodyear Mogg, on a report on the YSU faculty union's call for an audit of non-academic divisions, made in response to academic cuts administrators proposed last week
