Women's Volleyball Sweeps Hartford Behind Dominant Offensive Effort - Stony Brook University Athletics - Stony Brook Athletics

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University women's volleyball team (12-11, 6-3 America East) rolled to its fourth sweep in its last five matches as it downed Hartford (4-18, 2-7 America East) in straight sets on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves were paced by a dominant offensive attack as they combined to hit .318 and recorded 45 kills en route to their fifth win in their last six matches.
 
Stony Brook led wire-to-wire in the first set as it defeated Hartford, 25-16, to go up 1-0 in the match. The Seawolves used a pair of long scoring runs to pull away in the first set. Stony Brook first used a 5-1 run to take an 11-6 advantage. The teams traded points until the Seawolves went on an 8-0 scoring run to go up 24-15 in the set. Stony Brook ended the opening set on a 9-1 run as freshman Erin Garr was at the service line for seven of those nine points.
 
The Seawolves carried that momentum over into the second set as they went on to extend their lead to 2-0 in the match as they knocked off the Hawks, 25-18, in the frame. Sophomore outside hitter Leoni Kunz did a bulk of her damage in the second set. Kunz registered seven of her 11 kills in the second. She was nearly perfect from the floor in the second set as she had seven kills with only one error.
 
 
Stony Brook and Hartford traded blows in the third set, but ultimately the Seawolves were able to come out victorious by capturing the set by the final score of 25-21. Junior outside hitter Amiyah De'Long took over in the third set as she totaled six of her 12 kills in the match.
 
Stony Brook used a crucial 4-0 run to pull away late in the set. The run shut down any momentum that Hartford built up as the Seawolves took a 23-19 lead and went on to seal the victory as it closed out the third set with a 25-21 win.
 
 
STATS AND NOTES
  • De'Long continued her strong play as she finished with a match-high 12 kills on .478 hitting. Her .478 hitting percentage tied her single-match season-high as she also hit .478 against Binghamton on October 17.
  • Sophomore setter Torri Henry paced the Seawolves' offensive attack as she handed out 37 assists. It was the second time this season that she finished a three-set match with 37 assists. Henry has the top two assists totals for three-set matches this season in the America East (41 assists vs. Binghamton on Oct. 1, 37 assists vs. Hartford on Oct. 31, 37 assists vs. NJIT on Oct. 15). She has dished out 30 or more assists in six consecutive matches.
  • Freshman outside hitter Erin Garr hit an efficient .333 and totaled nine kills in the win. Garr added three digs, two aces, and two blocks to her nine-kill effort.
  • Kunz finished with a near double-double as she tallied 11 kills and nine digs.
  • Redshirt junior middle blocker Enitan Omolewa registered eight kills on .368 hitting, six digs, and two blocks.
  • Defensively, the Seawolves had three student-athletes record 10 or more digs in the match. Graduate libero Kiani Kerstetter led the team with 14 digs, senior outside hitter Hailey Barden picked up 13 digs, and senior libero Paige Jaeger notched a season-high 10 digs.

"We did a great job executing the game plan throughout the match today. I thought our decision making as attackers was really good. I also thought we made several defensive adjustments throughout the match to put us in better situations as the day went on. Nice to get this one!" Said head coach Kristin Belzung.
