DETROIT -- In addition to training some of the world's best hockey players for optimum performance, the Detroit Red Wings are also focused on fueling youth and families in Hockeytown to help build a hunger-free community.

Throughout last week, the Red Wings and Kroger teamed up to provide 2,000 breakfast kits to families in the community in partnership with Forgotten Harvest to help continue their mission to fight hunger and food insecurity.

More than 50 volunteers from the Red Wings and Kroger joined Forgotten Harvest's mobile food pantries to help pack and distribute breakfast kits to families across metro Detroit.

"The Red Wings know how important it is for children to start their day fueled and ready to learn in school," Red Wings and Tigers director of community impact Kevin Brown said. "In partnership with our friends at Kroger and Forgotten Harvest, we're proud to deliver 2,000 breakfast kits filled with shelf stable food for hundreds of families in need across metro Detroit."

The Red Wings have partnered with Michigan-based organizations like Kroger and Forgotten Harvest for several years with initiatives like canned food drives, fundraising events and more.

"Kroger is happy to partner with the Detroit Red Wings and the Red Wings Foundation to support our communities in need with nearly 2,000 bags packed with breakfast foods for children and families," Kroger corporate affairs manager Rachel Hurst said. "Partnerships like this allow us to amplify our continued commitment toward fighting for Zero Hunger in our communities we serve."

Kroger contributes food and funds equal to 200 million meals per year through more than 80 Feeding America food bank partners, while Forgotten Harvest delivers 138,000 pounds of surplus food per day to local charities five days a week, providing families in need with fresh and nutritious food free of charge.

"We're extremely thankful to Kroger for not only providing the shelf stable food, but also the amazing Kroger employees who volunteered their time alongside Red Wings colleagues to sort and pack each breakfast kit at Little Caesars Arena," Brown said. "These selfless efforts positively impact the lives of hundreds of children and families in our community together."
