McPHERSON, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - The McPherson Bullpups came back in overtime to defeat the Winfield Vikings 21 to 14.
The teams met in McPherson for the Ark Valley/Chisolm Trail Division III matchup.
McPherson entered the game undefeated. Winfield lost the previous week to Buhler 18 to 7.
Winfield won the coin toss but deferred to the second half.
Both teams saw their opening drives go for naught.
Late in the first quarter, Winfield looked to go three and out with fourth and 17. During the punt, a McPherson defender ran into Ryan Yingling, the Vikings’ quarterback and punter. The personal foul resulted in an automatic first down.
A short two-yard rush then set up second and eight from the Winfield 40-yard line. Yingling rolled out with the ball and found Ar’mon Acosta wide open in the middle of the field. Acosta then ran the rest of the way for a 60-yard touchdown pass.
Austin Bryant came on to kick the point after the touchdown. His kick bounced off the upright and fell away no good.
Winfield led 6 to 0.McPherson’s first drive of the second quarter started with recovering a Viking fumble on the Winfield 38 yard line.
Jaytim Gumm would carry the ball for the next seven plays. He would cover 40-yards and score the Bullpups’ first touchdown of the night.
Blaise Hoover made the PAT giving McPherson a 7 to 6 lead.
A common theme in the first half was turnovers. Winfield fumbled the ball once. McPherson set it on the ground twice and also threw two interceptions.
Winfield started the second half with the ball on their 29-yard line. They would use eight plays to march down to score a go-ahead touchdown. Riley Yingling scored on a 34-yard quarterback keeper.
The Vikings went for two points and completed it on a pass from Yingling to Kody Brenn.
The Vikings led 14 to 7.
Late in the third quarter, McPherson took over the ball on their 16-yard line. They used 12 plays to score the tying touchdown on a one-yard rush by Jaytim Grumm.
Both teams had 14 points.
Winfield got the ball back and used up six minutes off the clock over 15 plays. The drive stalled at the Winfield 42-yard line when they had to punt on fourth and 16.
The teams then traded possessions back and forth, but no one could pull ahead.
With 7.8 seconds left on the clock, Winfield gambled and sent out Austin Bryant to kick a 44-yard field goal from the 27-yard line. His kick had the distance but sailed wide of the goalposts.
The game went to overtime.
Winfield won the toss again and elected to go on defense first.
McPherson lined up on the ten-yard line of the south side of the field.
Jaytim Gumm got the ball the first two plays to get the Bullpups down to the one-yard line. Aiden Hoover then took the ball into the endzone on the third play. His brother, Blaise, kicked the extra point to put McPherson up 21 to 14.
Winfield took the ball over on the 10-yard line next. Ar’mon Acosta rushed for three yards on the first play. Then on the second play, the Vikings fumbled the ball. McPherson recovered to end the game.
McPherson’s Jaytim Gumm carried the ball most with 22 plays for 158 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.
Winfield’s Riley Yingling and Ar’mon Acosta shared the running with 20 and 21 carries each. Yingling gained 109 yards and one touchdown. Acosta gained 45 yards. Acosta also recorded 70 receiving yards and one touchdown from the air.
”We knew Winfield was a good football team coming into the game,” said Jayce Pavlovich, McPherson’s Head Coach. “I was proud how our team came together in the second half and how they responded.”
”I’m stunned right now. I felt we had a chance to continue the overtime,” said Winfield Head Coach Monty Lewis after the game. “We had the opportunity to win the game but Byrant pulled the kick wide. I think we were solid in all three phases at times. It was a good physical football game.”
McPherson improves to 4 and 0 on the season. Winfield’s record goes to .500 at 2 and 2.
