After being shut out in the first half, Grimsley's football team battled back to earn a gritty 21-19 win on the road at Reagan on Friday.

The Whirlies (2-0), ranked No. 3 in the West in HighSchoolOT's Top 25, scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second half to take control and held on late to seal the victory.

Leading the charge for Grimsley was senior quarterback Alonza Barnett III. Barnett completed 19 of 33 passes for 215 yards with two touchdowns in the third quarter to give the Whirlies the lead.

The No. 24 Raiders (1-1) looked strong in the early goings. After both teams turned the ball over on downs, VJ Wilkins delivered the game's opening score, taking a shovel pass from Kam Hill for a 5-yard touchdown to make it 7-0.

Reagan had a chance to go up by two touchdowns with the ball at the Grimsley 1-yard line, but turned it over on downs. However, a couple plays later Semaj Turner came up with a sack in the back of the end zone to force a safety and make it 9-0 with 2:35 left in the second quarter. The Raiders took the ensuing kickoff and marched down to the 7-yard line, setting up a 24-yard field goal by Rocco Gigliotti as time expired to give Reagan a 12-0 lead at the break.

After Grimsley fumbled on the first possession of the second half, the Whirlies' defense forced a stop to give the ball back to Barnett, who finally led the breakthrough drive that resulted in a 27-yard TD pass to a wide open Tyson Resper to trim the deficit to 12-7 with 5:33 left in the third quarter.

A couple plays later, Reagan fumbled. Quran Deablo recovered it at the 15-yard line, setting up the Whirlies with great field position. And even after penalties and a sack backed them up, Barnett came up clutch on fourth and 15 with a 21-yard TD pass over the middle to sophomore wide receiver Alex Taylor. That gave Grimsley its first lead of the evening, 14-12 with 3:19 left in the third quarter.

Reagan moved the chains twice on the following drive before being forced to punt. An errant snap went over the head of Gigliotti, who picked up the loose ball and tried to kick it away, but the ball was blocked and recovered by Antione Shaw at the Raiders' 7-yard line. Grimsley running back Jeiel Melton punched it in from 2 yards out to push the Whirlies lead to 21-12 with 11:55 left in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders made one last push in the final minutes and made Grimsley sweat as Hill dumped off a pass to senior wideout Zion Fant, who leaped over the right pylon for the touchdown, making it 21-19 with 48 seconds remaining. However, the Whirlies recovered the ensuing onside kick, allowing Barnett to kneel down and kill the clock.

Next up, Grimsley will face another tough test on the road at Pine Crest. The Patriots (2-0) are ranked No. 8 in the East.

Reagan will look to bounce back next week at Myers Park. The Mustangs (1-1) are ranked No. 9 in the West.
