Rolesville, N.C. — There will be a new No. 1 team in the east region of the HighSchoolOT Top 25 rankings next week.
Rolesville, the top-ranked team in the preseason poll and the defending 4AA eastern regional champion, dropped its season opener to unranked Pinecrest, 40-36.
It was a game of momentum swings, but Pinecrest weathered the last effort from Rolesville. After Nahjiir Seagraves caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Brodie Karres, Pinecrest led Rolesville 40-36 with just 3:38 left in the game. The Patriots turned Rolesville over on downs on the Rams' next possession.
But the Rams still had a chance. Ishawn Shoulars recovered a fumble by Pinecrest on the Rams' 18-yard line with 2:02 left. Quarterback Byrum Brown used his legs and his arm to get Rolesville down the field. The Rams got all the way to the Pinecrest 17-yard line, but the Patriots' defense made a stand there. Rolesville turned the ball over on downs with just over a minute left.
Things didn't look so great early on for Pinecrest though.
Just over three minutes into the first quarter, Brown connected with Noah Rogers for a 12-yard touchdown to put Rolesville up 7-0. On the ensuing kickoff, a mishap for Pinecrest resulted in a safety, pushing the Rolesville lead to 9-0. Rolesville then returned the ensuing kick for a touchdown, but it was called back for a penalty.
That allowed Pinecrest to catch its breath. The defense held and when the offense returned to the field, Samet Cobb scored the Patriots' first touchdown on a three-yard run. Karres added a two-point conversion to cut Rolesville's lead to 9-8 in the first quarter.
Rolesville quickly answered through. Brown threw his second touchdown pass of the game when he connected with Dejuan Mickens for a 23-yard score with just 44 seconds left in the quarter. The Rams led 16-8 going into the second quarter.
Pinecrest tied the game midway through the quarter when Karres scored on a two-yard keeper and Cobb added the two-point conversion. But again, Rolesville answered. A big completion from Brown to Rogers setup a Davon Dunn five-yard run for a touchdown, but the conversion attempt failed and the Rams settled for a 22-16 lead.
That opened the door for Pinecrest to take its first lead before halftime. Xavier Dowd broke a 26-yard touchdown run and the Patriots led 23-22 at the break.
Rolesville wasted little time in the third quarter. Brown found Rogers again for a 15-yard touchdown, then completed a pass to Mickens for the successful two-point try. The score put Rolesville up 30-23.
Every time it seemed the Rams had some momentum though, Pinecrest answered. Karres broke a 45-yard keeper for a touchdown, but the Patriots didn't tie the game because Rolesville blocked the extra point. Leading 30-29, Brown ran for a touchdown of his own, but this time Pinecrest blocked the extra-point attempt. Rolesville led 36-29 going into the fourth quarter.
With 8:51 left, Pinecrest settled for a 25-yard field goal by Braden Cole to get within 36-32 of the Rams, and then the mometnum stuck with the Patriots. After a defensive stop, Seagraves scored his 38-yard touchdown to put Pinecrest up 40-36, a lead the Patriots never lost.
Pinecrest will have its home opener in Week 2 when Anson County visits on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the road doesn't get any easier for Rolesville. The Rams travel to No. 14 East Forsyth in Week 2.
