FORT MYERS, Fla. — A Naples family headed to Orlando for a volleyball tournament was driving on I-75, Thursday.
While driving between the Daniels Parkway and Colonial Boulevard exits, they saw a man reading a book while at the wheel of a Tesla.
“Oh my God,” said Jimmy Melton. “He’s reading a book. At 70 miles an hour.”
The man was likely using the Autopilot features available in Tesla vehicles.
Parker Provance captured a quick video of the bookworm catching up on his favorite book.
“I was with my friend and she spotted it and was like ‘Oh my gosh, Parker, record this.’ So I did,” she said.
Her father, Lance, pointed out the vehicle to them.
“It was pretty interesting to see the Tesla because it was in self-driving mode,” he said.
Gabe Miranda-Sousa owns a self-driving Tesla.
“You can activate and let it drive itself,” said Miranda-Sousa.
Autonomous driving starts with just the click of a button.
He took our the NBC-2 crew for a ride to experience it firsthand.
“So how does autopilot work? And do you have to pay attention?
The Tesla drove down McGregor Boulevard in full autopilot mode – meaning Gabe could take his hands off the wheel.
The Tesla owner’s manual saying that’s the last thing you want to do, saying “never depend on these components to keep you safe.”
“You do have reminders that keep you present,” said Mirando-Sousa. “You have to shake the wheel or press a button to let the car know that you’re still there.”
The new Tesla dealership in Fort Myers didn’t want to comment.
NBC-2 also reached out to the Tesla Corporate office in California. We haven’t heard back yet.
