Chefs feed cold, hungry Houstonians during devastating winter storm - Houston Chronicle

As more than a million Houstonians struggled with no power, no heat and no water in freezing temperatures since Monday's winter storm, chefs stepped up to help the community as they've done many times before — from hurricanes to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, chef Chris Williams of Museum District restaurant Lucille's drove to the Power Center in Southwest Houston, where he operates a kitchen for his nonprofit, Lucille's 1913. The kitchen had been broken into, but there was still a more pressing issue: feeding people in need.

Williams — with the help of his brother Ben, his father Connie, his nieces and pastor Rudy Rasmus — cooked 150 meals in the Power Center kitchen on Tuesday. The team delivered the food to residents of Temenos housing in East Downtown and Project Row Houses in Third Ward.

On Wednesday, the Williams crew cooked another 200 meals and brought them to Gallery Furniture, which owner Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale turned into "warming centers" for people to take shelter and grab a hot meal.

The Houston restaurant industry activated as soon as temperatures dropped. On Monday evening, Turkey Leg Hut set up its food truck at the George R. Brown Convention Center Downtown, which was providing shelter to those who had already lost power and heat, and gave out free food to people.

World Central Kitchen, chef José Andrés' organization that feeds people during disasters, partnered with Burns Original BBQ and Street to Kitchen on Wednesday. The Houston barbecue institution prepared more than 700 chopped beef sandwiches to be delivered to senior homes across the region, from north Houston to Webster. The East End Thai restaurant brought 400 meals to Gallery Furniture's warming center.

Bakfish Brewing's taproom did not have power on Wednesday, but the Pearland brewery decided to give out its reverse osmosis water (which is used in brewing) to anyone who came up with a container to fill. Reverse osmosis water does not need to be boiled, which is useful as the city of Houston issued a boil notice on Wednesday morning that is still in effect.

On Wednesday, staff at the Pearland location of Killen's Barbecue distributed 1,500 free barbecue sandwiches to people who couldn't cook at home. On Thursday starting at 11 a.m., Killen's Burgers in Pearland will hand out burgers and fries on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Lucille's team said it's planning to distribute 1,000 more meals on Thursday and Friday to residents of Acres Homes and other Houston neighborhoods.

Andrés confirmed on Twitter that the World Central Kitchen operation would keep running in Houston on Thursday.
