ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by 24 points from junior Leigha Brown, the No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team earned an 82-59 victory over Wright State on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 6) at Crisler Center.
Brown also scored 11 of U-M's 12 points in the third quarter. Junior Naz Hillmon recorded her third double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Hailey Brown and Amy Dilk also had a double-digit efforts with 10 points each.
Dilk and Hillmon each had five assists for Michigan (4-0) with Hillmon tying a career best, while senior Akienreh Johnson dished out four helpers.
Michigan scored 15 second-chance points and had 36 points in the paint against Wright State (0-2), while shooting 47 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-15). The Wolverines held the Raiders to 1-for-18 (5.6 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Michigan doubled up Wright State, 10-5, on a Leigha Brown three-pointer that was followed by a 7-0 run over the next 52 seconds. Dilk drained her first three-pointer of the season before driving the lane for a layup on her next trip down the floor. Leigha Brown capped off the run with a jumper and forced Wright State to burn a timeout with 5:31 remaining in the first quarter and U-M leading, 17-7.
The Wolverines were shooting lights-out from the floor gong 7-for-8 to take a 23-12 lead before WSU slowed down the Michigan attack. U-M allowed four final Raiders points to take a 10-point advantage, 26-16, into the second quarter.
After a slow start to the second quarter, U-M found its offensive stride, going up, 40-23, on a Danielle Rauch three-pointer with 4:18 remaining in the half. The Wolverines kept Wright State off the board for the final 2:43 of the half, taking a 48-27 lead into the halftime break.
Hillmon scored a team-best 14 points and grabbed six rebounds in the first half, while Leigha Brown had 11 points.
WSU capitalized on a U-M scoring drought to work its way within 13, 52-39, on a 12-2 run that lasted just under five minutes. Leigha Brown was responsible for all but one of Michigan's points in the third quarter to help give the Wolverines to take a 60-48 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
The Raiders were issued a technical foul with 20 seconds elapsed in the fourth quarter, and Leigha Brown made both free throws before Hillmon scored two points on the Wolverine inbound play. A minute later, Hailey Brown made a second-chance three-pointer to extend the Michigan lead to 67-51 with 8:24 remaining in the contest.
U-M continued to build on its lead in, going up by 23 points, 78-55, on a Maddie Nolan three-pointer with 4:21 left to play.
The Wolverines held their 23-point lead over the four minutes to lock up their fourth victory season.
Michigan will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule when they host Butler on Wednesday (Dec. 9) at Crisler Center. Opening tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus.
