Convicted "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli has claimed a cryptocurrency partnership with Barron Trump, the youngest child of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The securities fraudster said he and Barron Trump were the brains behind the enigmatic DJT crypto token, which launched in April. The token saw a jump in value this week after rumors it was linked to the former president, whose middle name is John.
"I have over 1000 pieces of evidence I created it with Barron," Shkreli told online crypto investigator ZachXBT, who shared the information on X, formerly Twitter.
He sent the message to ZachXBT after blockchain company Arkham Intelligence offered $150,000 bounty to anyone who could uncover the people or person behind the DJT token.
Shkreli later repeated his claim on a X live event where he said he worked with up to 50 people on the token, including 18-year-old Barron.
"We're friends, he wants to make money," Shkreli said during the live event about why Barron Trump wanted to get into cryptocurrency.
Newsweek contacted Trump's representatives and Shkreli by email for comment. Barron Trump has made no previous statements on any involvement in cryptocurrency.
DJT's value surged by up to 180 percent on Monday following rumors that Barron was behind the meme coin.
ZachXBT also posted transaction data that showed a major DJT shed $832,174 of the meme, which also happens to be a major holder of the Shoggoth token, which is linked to Shkreli's Shmartoggoth.ai—an artificial intelligence project.
"Coincidentally also a large holder on Martin's other project Shoggoth," ZachXBT wrote on X.
Since completing the live event, Shkreli has reposted multiple people on X who supported him and complimented him on his claims.
"What is happening right now,@MartinShkreli about to singlehandedly change 100 years of securities law... one tweet from Barron and this whole situation becomes a cultural moment," wrote David Bailey, the CEO of Bitcoin Magazine, and reposted by Shkreli.
Shkreli was released from federal prison in May 2022 after serving four years for securities fraud and lying to investors about the performance of his hedge funds MSMB Capital and MSMB Healthcare. Shkreli had been sentenced to seven years in 2018 but received an early release, reflecting credit for six months in custody before his sentence as well as good behavior in prison.
In January, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) banned Shkreli from the pharmaceutical industry for life. The ban came after a federal court in New York found him guilty of creating a monopoly and raising the price of Daraprim, a lifesaving drug, by 5,000 percent. This move made him an infamous figure in popular culture and earned him the nickname "pharma bro."
