An iconic San Francisco toy store that served as the inspiration behind the Toy Story franchise announced it would be closing in February due to high crime.
The Luhn family opened Jeffrey’s Toys in 1938, and the business grew to have seven locations, according to a report.
Now, the last location at 45 Kearny Street will close its doors.
Rising crime in downtown San Francisco has proven to be the ruin of countless retailers in the Bay Area, including Jeffrey’s Toys, said Ken Sterling, an attorney for the Luhn family.
“After 75 years of gratefully serving the San Francisco community, the store will be closing next month. The store has been struggling for a number of years, due to the perils and violence of the downtown environment, inflation, the decrease in consumer spending, and the demise of retail across the world,” Sterling said. “The family is saddened it has come to this, and we’ve explored all other options to try and keep the business going.”
Sterling also chastised the failure of the local government to protect the downtown area.
“The leadership of the City of San Francisco and the Downtown Association have their work cut out for them on how to revitalize what was once a vibrant and fun downtown experience,” the attorney added.
“We are working through this complex situation with the landlords and creditors, and at this time, I’ve advised my clients to not be interviewed by the press.”

Last month, Jeffrey’s Toys co-owner Matthew Luhn opened up about the location’s struggle with crime, including the attempted stabbing of a store employee, the report noted.
Luhn also stated the location’s sales are no longer able to meet the $20,000-per-month rent price.
