Behind The Scenes At ‘The Golden Bachelor’ Wedding: What Viewers Didn’t See On Air - Deadline

Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist concluded their whirlwind romance Thursday night the same way it began, live on national television.

The inaugural Golden Bachelor couple said “I do” in front of 150 guests (and all those watching at home) at the La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, California. Deadline was invited, along with select other press, to attend the Golden Wedding in person.

While much of the production made it to the live show, there was also plenty that went on behind the scenes to pull off the event. Although the cameras started rolling at 5 p.m. PT, guests began arriving around 4 p.m. to check in and get ready to walk the golden carpet to the pre-ceremony cocktail hour.

During the cocktail hour, guests enjoyed appetizers, including a nacho bar and meatballs. They were also treated to themed cocktails, like the “Birthday Suit,” harkening back to Theresa’s arrival at the Bachelor mansion and the “One Headlight,” referencing their first one-on-one date. Whoever thought of “Turner into a Mrs.” deserves a special shoutout.

A section of the resort was reserved for the wedding, but the rest was open for guests, who were eager to catch a glimpse of the happenings and potentially snap a photo with the host of Bachelor Nation alums in attendance.

From the time the festivities began, resort guests gathered to peek over a wall that separated the party from the rest of the resort to observe from afar.

Of course, Jesse Palmer was on hand to host the pre-ceremony hour, as were Kathy Swarts and Charity Lawson (whose fiancé Dotun Olubeko was also there), who served as the correspondents who welcomed guests and collected well wishes from the likes of Season 28 Bachelor Joey Graziadei, as well as many of the Golden Women, including runner up Leslie Fhima.

Plenty of Golden Women were on hand to celebrate including Sandra Mason, Faith Martin, Anna Zalk, Joan Vassos, Patty James, Natascha Hardee, Edith Aguirre, April Kirkwood, and Susan Noles (who officiated the wedding!).

Other Bachelor Nation attendees included Ashley Iaconetti and Jared Haibon, Ben Higgins, Kaitlyn Bristowe, Michelle Young, Dean Unglert and Caelynn Miller Keyes, Adam Gottschalk and Raven Gates, Wells Adams, Rachel Recchia, Mari Pepin and Kenny Braasch, Tayshia Adams, Zach Shallcross and Kaity Biggar, and Trista and Ryan Sutter, and Jason and Molly Mesnick.

Brayden Bowers and Christina Mandrell were also in attendance, and they had plenty of their own to celebrate after Bowers proposed during the cocktail hour.

Audiences saw Bowers get down on one knee, but what they didn’t catch was the surprised look on most of the producers faces, who didn’t know it was going to happen. Only a select group of the production and publicity teams were clued in on that stunt ahead of time.

Most of the ceremony was televised, though viewers may have noticed Gerry chuckling and mouthing something to guests as he walked down the aisle. That’s because a few minutes earlier, he’d already walked to the altar as a practice run so the producers could estimate how long he would take. As he’d walked back down the aisle to take his place for the real thing, the guests cheered and whooped.

Another element that was cut from the broadcast was a speech from Gerry’s son-in-law, Rob. He told a story about how Gerry had always welcomed him as family, “no questions asked,” and he promised Theresa that she would always be treated the same.

TV audiences also missed a pre-ceremony warning from producers that some were seated next to confetti canons that would erupt when Gerry and Theresa walked back down the aisle as newlyweds. But, the vows were so heartfelt that it looked like nearly everyone forgot and was still startled by the blast (which was quite gentle, to be fair).

Following the ceremony, guests headed over to the televised portion of the reception, which was also outdoors. By this point, almost everyone was very chilly, since the temperature had dropped drastically since the cocktail hour. Another thing you didn’t see on TV — everyone’s goosebumps! Seriously, it was pretty cold. During the ceremony, guests were provided with shawls and blankets to keep warm, but once the reception began, there was little reprieve.

As the crowd prepared for this part of the event, Ben Higgins roped Leslie Fhima into a two-person dance party before the rest of the crowd began to join in. A rather peculiar rendition of “Don’t Stop Believing” performed by The Dan Band kicked off the celebration. But, after just a few minutes, the band packed it up and a DJ took over to play some wedding-related tunes.

Once Gerry and Theresa entered the reception, they received countless embraces and well wishes from the other Golden Women, who seemed thrilled to be watching the two tie the knot — including Martin and Fhima. As the broadcast wound down, guests broke it down to “Marry You” by Bruno Mars.

After another 20 or so minutes of dancing and mingling, guests were ushered inside for a more intimate reception that press (and the cameras) were not invited to. That began around 7:30 p.m. PT.
