PHILADELPHIA - It's never easy in the Big 5, and tonight was no different. The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team powered past Penn 57-50 inside Hagan Arena on Tuesday night, propelled by a career-best 23 points from Talya Brugler.
Despite holding a comfortable 12 point lead heading into the final frame, Saint Joseph's (3-0, 1-0 Big 5) fell victim to cold shooting in the fourth quarter to allow Penn (1-2, 0-1 Big 5) back into the contest. But it was Brugler's six points of the Hawks' 11 in the fourth, including a post finish with 31 seconds left to put SJU up five that sealed the victory for the Crimson and Gray.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams started slow out the gates, the first basket coming from Penn at the 7:16 mark. After a quick 4-0 lead from the Quakers, back-to-back buckets from Talya Brugler and Mackenzie Smith leveled the scoring for the Hawks.
- A pair of Brugler free throws midway through the quarter gave SJU its first lead of the game at 11-9, Jaden Walker following up with a smooth jumper on the baseline to extend the lead to four. Both teams would be level at 13-13 after the first quarter, each shooting 5-17 (29.4%) with eight rebounds each.
- A pair of threes from Laura Ziegler and Julia Nyström between a Penn basket gave the Hawks an early start in the second frame.
- The Hawks never extended their lead more than five in the first half, but never relinquished the lead. Penn's Jordan Obi knocked down a triple at the buzzer to cut the halftime lead to 25-23 in favor of Saint Joseph's.
- Three triples on three straight possessions awaited the Hawks on the other end of the break, Brugler starting and finishing the spurt with Laura Ziegler knocking down her third trey of the game in between. The Quakers responded, keeping the score within three during the offensive outburst.
- The Hawks continued the strong shooting, outscoring Penn 15-6 in the final six and a half minutes of the quarter to push the lead to 46-34 after three quarters.
- Penn ripped off 12 of the first 17 points to start the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to 51-46. Saint Joseph's led by five with just over three and a half minutes remaining as both teams failed to find the back of the net for 2:42 as Penn cut the deficit to one possession with 59 seconds on the clock.
- However, it was Brugler who once again answered with a counter punch, fending off a double team with the shot clock running down to finish at the rim and extend the score back to five points, 55-50. A strong pair of defensive possessions mixed with two free throws from Katie Jekot sealed the victory as the Hawks moved to 3-0 to start the season.
GAME NOTES
- Brugler scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half, shooting 7-9 from the field after starting 1-7.
- The Hawks kept Kayla Padilla, who averaged 25.5 points in her first games, to just six points on 3-13 shooting, including an 0-8 mark behind the arc.
- Lost in the shuffle was Jekot, who dished out eight assists, a season-high. Jekot also added a season-best eight rebounds in a near double-double effort with six points.
- Coming off Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week plaudits, Ziegler continued to impress with 11 points and eight rebounds on the night.
- Mackenzie Smith finished with double-figures for the third-straight game, the only Hawk to do so.
- The Hawks finished 21-52 (40.4%) from the field and 7-19 (36.8%) from deep. SJU won the rebound battle slightly with a 35-33 margin.
- Penn finished 20-57 (35.1%) from the floor, connecting on 7-23 (30.4%) of its attempts from distance.
- For the third time in 12 seasons, the Hawks have started 3-0.
UP NEXT
- The Hawks head on the road for the first time on the season, taking on SEC foe Vanderbilt on Sunday, November 20. Tip is slated for 2 p.m. on the SEC Network.
