The first win of the season always feels good, as Eastern Washington men's basketball earned the first victory of the 2022-23 season on Monday night (Nov. 14). Eastern defeated Mississippi Valley State, 60-52, in the team's final game of the Outrigger Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

After dropping the first two games of the tournament, the Eagles rebounded with a resilient effort to defeat the Delta Devils. Eastern is now 1-3 on the season, while Mississippi Valley falls to 0-4.

In 35 minutes of playing time, Angelo Allegri scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, while shooting 3-of-8(37.5%) from three-point range. Allegri was one of three for Eastern to score in double figures, as Tyreese Davis also had 14 and Deon Stroud added 11.

"At the end of the day, our guys grinded that one out," head coach David Riley said. "Nothing seemed like it was falling for us, and we had looks that we would take any day of the week. They just didn't go down early on. Our defense held in there and we did a great job on the glass. I think the one thing we've done a good job of, since I've been here, is to take steps to get better. What stood out for me in the first games was rebounding. We watched a ton of film and I said that we were not going to move on if we don't fix our rebounding. I'm really proud of our guys, the last two games, the way we improved on the glass."

The game stayed competitive in the first half, as neither team led by more than four points through the first 20 minutes. Allegri scored 11 of his points in the first half. The Eagles would go up by four at 7:16 left in the half on a made three-pointer by Stroud. The Delta Devils would use a 6-0 run to take the lead and would hold a three-point advantage at 3:16 left in the half. Casey Jones would score the next three points for the Eagles to tie the game up at 23. MSVU would stay a possession ahead and went into the half with a slim, 28-26 lead.

Eastern shot 7-of-22 in the opening half, along with a 3-of-14(21.4%) line from three. The Delta Devils shot 12-of-28(42.9%) in the first, with only a 2-of-7(28.6%) from behind the arc.

Steele Venters scored the Eagles' first four points of the second half take the lead back from MVSU. Davis would again come up with a big shot, nailing a three to put Eastern up five points at 16:01. Despite finding some rhythm on offense, the Delta Devils would not go away and kept the score close. They pulled ahead at 10:08 left in the game with a jump shot for a 41-39 lead. Allegri immediately hit a three to take the lead back. The Delta Devils followed up with a three and the back-and-forth battle continued. The Eagles would still run their offense and kept putting points on the board. After MVSU had the lead at 49-47, Ethan Price found Stroud racing down the court and he slammed the ball home to tie the game. Following a Delta Devil score, Stroud would then take the lead back with a three for a 52-51 advantage with 4:38 on the clock. With the lead, the Eagles clamped down and held on for the 60-52 win. Davis was the closer for Eastern, scoring the team's final six points on the way to the victory.

"[Tyreese and Dion] are really good players and it takes time for guys to get comfortable in our system. They are starting to get there, and they stepped up for us," Riley added.

The two teams were close in shooting, as Eastern was 36.2 percent from the floor and Mississippi Valley St. had a 36.4 shooting night.
