Volleyball Goes on the Attack in Come From Behind Win - Wheeling University Athletics

South Euclid, OH. – Early on in Friday night's Mountain East Conference (MEC) volleyball match, the Wheeling University Volleyball team (10-6, 4-0) found themselves down 1-0. They then relied on their front line to help them back in the game and they went on to beat Notre Dame College 3-1 as they move to 4-0 in MEC play. Four different Cardinals ended the night in double digit kills as the Cardinals won three straight sets to claim the match.

In set one, Notre Dame college got the early lead, scoring four of the first five points of the set to make it a 4-1 set. Wheeling would battle back to tie the set on three different occasions, but a 5-1 run by the Falcons late in the set was enough to open up the score. Notre Dame College took the set 25-22 and the Cardinals fell behind 1-0 in the match. However, in set two Wheeling came out with a purpose scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the set. Tylah Yeomans got the first three kills of the run and Wheeling was out to a 10-3 lead. They opened things up to 18-7 with an 8-4 run and went on to win the set 25-10. With the match tied at 1-1, both teams were looking to get the edge in the crucial set three of the night.

Notre Dame College took an early 2-1 lead, but as the set continued the two teams battled to an even score. With the set tied at 6-6, Notre Dame College would get another one-point advantage at 8-7 as both teams jockeyed for position. Allonda Watkins smacked down a kill and began a 7-1 run that turned it into a 14-9 Cardinals advantage. Notre Dame College battled back to make it a three-point set at 19-16 with the set hanging in the balance. An attack error from the Falcons put the ball back in Wheeling's court and they took advantage. They scored six of the final seven points of the set and held set point at 24-17. Yeomans came through again with the final kill of the set and the Cardinals won 25-17. The Cardinals now had the advantage at 2-1 in the match and looked to close things down.

Set four began much like the first set as Notre Dame College once again took a 4-1 lead to start things off. This time, Wheeling was able to battle back and tied things up at 7-7 on a Riley Kindall kill. The set remained tied at 11-11 in the middle of the set before the Cardinals took off again. Wheeling went on a 7-2 run that made it an 18-13 set and gave Wheeling the advantage. They expanded their lead to 23-16 and were on the verge of completing the 3-1 victory. However, the Falcons would not go down without a fight, going on a short 3-1 run that made it a 24-19 set with set point hanging in the balance. It would once again be Yeomans who came through with the matches final kill and Wheeling went on to win 25-19 and win the match 3-1.

Four different Cardinals finished the night with double digit kills, led by Tylah Yeomans 's 13 kill effort. Lexi Smith and Allonda Watkins followed right behind her with 11 kills each and Mady Winters added 10 kills. Smith was the most efficient hitter on the night with a .556 hitting percentage and the team as a whole hit .366. Karly Niesen continued her strong season with 51 assists and added one kill on the night. Riley Kindall led the team's defensive effort with 16 Digs and Niesen was right behind her with 14 Digs of her own. Chylyn Pate and Tylah Yeomans each added 10 Digs on the night as Wheeling moved to 4-0 in conference play.
