ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team won the Big Ten Preview meet at the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday morning (Sept. 9).
The Wolverines raced against Big Ten competitors Iowa, Minnesota, Ohio State, Northwestern and Rutgers in a preview for the Big Ten Championships, which Michigan will host at the same course on Oct. 28. In the team race, Michigan came out on top, earning only 22 points. Ohio State came in second with 62 points.
Senior Ericka VanderLende finished in second place only milliseconds behind Addie Engel (20:54.4) of Ohio State with a time of 20:54.9. Junior Kayla Windemuller finished in third less than a second behind VanderLende at 20:55.5.
Both VanderLende and Windemuller led throughout the race -- leading at the mile, two mile, and 5000-meter marks -- but fell behind in the last 1000 to fall to second and third, respectively.
The Wolverines took three of the next four spots with senior Sam Tran (21:11.9) finishing fourth, junior Katelynne Hart (21:15.9) taking sixth, and fifth-year senior Samantha Saenz (21:20.1) finishing in 7th place.
Through the first mile, the top 19 competitors were separated by less than two seconds with the gap widening to 18 seconds between one and 10 by the second mile.
Coming up next for the Maize and Blue is a weekend off before the Wolverines head to the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. on Sept. 24.
