BUFFALO, NY – Niagara (6-4, 2-0 MAAC) outscored Canisius (6-3, 1-1 MAAC) 8-3 in the second half to complete the come-from-behind win over its Battle of the Bridge Rival.
Senior goalkeeper Michelle Messenger finished with 14 saves, and three Purple Eagles recorded a natural hat trick in the win.
Game Recap
First Quarter
• Niagara jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Lexi Braniecki and Lois Garlow in the first four minutes of action.
• With 9:02 on the clock, Canisius scored its first goal of the contests to cut NU's lead in half.
• The score remained the same for the next seven minutes before the Griffs tied the game at two with 1:49 remaining.
• The game would remain tied at two as the first quarter came to a close.
Second Quarter
• The Purple and White would take a 3-2 lead 18-seconds into the second quarter when Braniecki beat the opposing keeper for her second goal of the contest.
• After Canisius tied the game at three, the Purple and White scored back-to-back goals to take a 5-3 lead over the Griffs.
• The first came from Jaclyn Crane on a free-position attempt, followed by a tally from Garlow with 5:44 to go in the half.
• Canisius would go on a 6-0 run to close the half and take a 9-5 lead over the Purple Eagles.
Third Quarter
• Niagara ended the Griffs run with a goal at the 9:18 mark of the third. Braniecki set up Brenna Duffy for her first goal of the season.
• Canisius would go back up by four, 10-6, with 5:06 left in the third.
• Rachel Crane scored her second goal of the game at the 4:07 mark, followed by Andra Savage finding the back of the net 1:24 later to make it a one-goal game.
• After a Canisius goal with 16 seconds left, the Purple Eagles won the ensuing draw control, and Andra Savage found Lucy Rugaber for the goal with five seconds remaining.
Fourth Quarter
• The offensive run would continue into the fourth for Niagara as Rachel Crane scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 11-11. The game-tying goal by Crane came via a free-position goal at the 7:29 mark.
• That sparked two more goals for Niagara over the next 4:10 of game time. Braniecki scored her third goal of the contest, followed by a tally from Garlow that was set up by Duffy, giving the Purple and White a 13-11 advantage with 3:22 to go.
• Canisius made it a one-goal game with 1:36 to go in regulation and nearly tied the contest in the final minute and a half of action.
• Still, the Niagara defense stood tall with a timely caused turnover from captain Jess Foley with 54 seconds left on the clock.
• Niagara would hold on to the ball and earn the comeback win over Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius.
Niagara Notes
• Niagara starts league play 2-0 for the first time under head coach Wendy Stone.
• Seven Purple Eagles found the back of the net with Garlow, Braniecki, and R. Crane recording natural hat tricks.
• For the first time in her career Garlow has reached the 30-goal plateau with her three goals this afternoon.
• Niagara won 13 draw controls, compared to 16 for the Griffs. Garlow led the Purple and White with six.
• Braniecki and Amber Daley led NU with two groundballs as the Purple Eagles finished with 14 for the game.
• Niagara posted a total of 27 shots. Garlow had a team-best seven shots, followed by Braniecki and R. Crane with four apiece.
• Messenger recorded her fourth game this season with 10 or more saves.
