Parker Edwards’ second home run of the night lifted Houston Baptist to victory in the Southland Conference opener against McNeese State Friday night.
Edwards hit a towering two-run shot with two out in the top of the 13th to give the Huskies (6-15) the 6-4 win in Joe Miller Ballpark. The loss dropped the Cowboys to 11-11.
The homer came off Andrew Sheridan (0-1).
Edwards was the reason there was extra innings. He hit a solo shot with one out in the top of the night to tie the score 4-4.
Edwards, who has five home runs on the season, hit his first shot of the night off McNeese closer Cameron Foster. It was Foster’s first blown save in eight tries.
Grant Rogers was the tough-luck McNeese starter. He went seven-plus innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs. Two of them came in after he was gone.
Rogers was pulled after allowing a hit and walk to start the eighth. Foster came in but struggled from the start with his control.
He walked the bases loaded, and after a strikeout, walked in a run. A fly ball to right produced another run to cut the McNeese lead to 4-3 heading into the ninth.
Foster struck out four in three innings of work, but the Huskies were able to get to him.
McNeese scored first on Reid Bourque’s second home run of the season, a solo shot in the third. The Cowboys made it 2-0 an inning later on Kade Hunter’s run-scoring double to center which drove home Brad Burckel from first.
That’s when the real excitement began. After the Huskies made it 2-1 on Reed Chumley’s RBI double, the Cowboys pulled off the rarest of plays.
With two out and the bases loaded in the fifth McNeese pulled off a triple steal, with Braden Duhon swiping home. Burckel followed with an RBI single for a 4-1 lead.
McNeese could not score after that as the HBU bullpen shut down the Cowboys. Six relievers combined to allow three hits over the final 81/3 innings without walking a batter. They also struck out 11.
The game marked the return to Lake Charles for Lance Berkman. The onetime Houston Astros star played against McNeese State when he was in college at Rice.
Last night he brought his Houston Baptist team to town.
a NOTES: McNeese will send Ty Abraham (2-2, 2.59 ERA) to the mound tonight against Jared Burch (0-2, 3.51). The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. On Sunday afternoon, Chance Stone (2-2, 3.72) is set to start for the Cowboys while HBU will counter with Will Ripoll (1-2, 4.63).
All starters in the series are right handed.
