OAK RUN, Calif. - Diamonds in the Rough Horse Rescue is struggling to get the hay they need to feed their horses for the winter.

Right now, the horse rescue says they have 80 bales of hay, which can feed the horses for another two months.

The problem for the sanctuary is supply and finding enough money to get the hay they need.

As the winter approaches, the rescue wants to get hay with alfalfa in it.

This hay provides higher nutrients and sugar than the normal grass hay they have now, which will help the horses keep their weight.

With supply shortages everywhere, the rescue says feed stores are having trouble supplying them with the hay they need.

“Their shipments aren’t coming in, and so they’re running out, and when they run out, we’re in big trouble,” said Angel Matthews.

Matthews runs The Diamonds in the Rough Horse Rescue with her mom, taking care of about 10 horses.

The rescue makes most of its money from donations, but 30% of its revenue comes from Matthews holding training and lessons with the horses.

That money goes straight back into horse care, including medical, food, and other costs.

After suffering a shoulder injury, Matthews couldn’t hold lessons throughout the summer, leaving the rescue short for this winter’s budget.

Because of low funds, Matthews has set up a fundraiser for the hay.

Right now, the goal is to raise $1,500 by December 31 but only has $285 so far.

Matthews hasn’t had issues getting support from the community before and is confident her goal will be met.

“It’s hard to think about the day that it wouldn’t,” said Matthews. “I just have full faith that it will not happen.”

Matthews and her mother said every horse has their own story full of sadness, with almost all of their horses being rescued from being sent to a slaughterhouse.

At the pasture at the Headwater Ranch, those horses can have their story rewritten.

Matthews works tirelessly to heal and train the horses she saves; with the hope, they will be adopted and find a forever home.

Her devotion is so strong that Matthews will skip meals or make her own sacrifices so the horses are kept in the best conditions.

“We go without a lot of time just to make sure they do have what they need, they come first,” said Matthews. “I don’t know, if I could save them all I would. To me, a horse is not a commodity, it’s a living being and they deserve the best care that you can give them.”
