The holidays are about spreading joy, not only to family and friends, but also to others in need around you.
You can help the hungry enjoy a warm meal at Feed my Sheep in Gulfport.
“When somebody is hungry, feeding them gives them joy and that’s what I get out of doing this is the joy of getting to share with other people.” Every Monday, Lyn Stokes arrives at Feed my Sheep at 8:30 to prepare to go meals that will be delivered to those that are homebound. “Originally I was asked to volunteer to fill in for someone who couldn’t and then I kind of got bit by the bug and I enjoyed doing it. It just makes the week start off right.”
Standing next to her on the line is one of her good friends, Deanna Hatten. Together, they travel from Wiggins to Feed my Sheep, boxing the more than 300 meals that will be distributed throughout the community. Hatten said, “You wake up in the morning and whatever problems you think you have, when you come down here, they all go away.”
Normally they work an hour-long shift, although they say it goes by quickly. “You just keep moving and it’s over with before you know it.” “You get more out of it than you put into it for sure.”
Once all of the to go boxes are filled, volunteers show up to deliver to the homebound who are often elderly. Every Monday, Becki Lackey delivers meals to her fixed route, many of which now feel like family. “There’s nothing like someone being happy to see you and knowing they’re okay and having a good day.”
Feed my Sheep needs about 15 to 20 volunteers a day to be able to operate, they’re always looking for help with a wide variety of shifts available. Executive Director David Lyon said, “It’s amazing the feeling you get knowing in a very small way you’re able to contribute back.”
