Working with a theme of “Sweet Treats, Good Eats… Only At the Oley Fair,” employees at Oley Valley Feed Inc. got busy in 2019 and created a sweet-themed exhibit that featured an area where visitors could get their pictures taken while holding various signs with sayings such as “Too Sweet to Handle” or “Sundae is My Favorite Day.”
The photo booth also featured a cutout and enlarged photo of the head of Kevin Guldin, the owner of Oley Valley Feed. Visitors could hold the likeness of Guldin in front of their faces for a fun picture, and many did so with great enthusiasm.
“The girls always like to find a way to make a fool of me,” Guldin said with a laugh, recalling the 2019 booth. “We all had a lot of fun with that photo booth and people who stopped by loved it.”
Their exhibit was named as the best indoor commercial exhibit two years ago, and the stakes are high to see if they can pull off first place again this year.
“I have no idea what this year’s booth will be like — I leave it all up to my employees,” Guldin said. “I credit it all to the ingenuity of my staff because I don’t have a creative bone in my body. I’ll be as surprised as anyone to see what they come up with this year.”
Chris Reidenhour, an Oley Valley Feed employee who with fellow employee Sarah Miller has been instrumental in coming up with ideas and decorating the booth, was tight-lipped about what the 2021 exhibit might look like. In fact, Reidenhour revealed about a week before the fair’s start date, recent events made it difficult to find time to plan for the booth and they were just getting started with a design to reflect this year’s theme of “Kumm Zu die Oley Fair!” but promised it would be ready.
“We’ve got this year’s theme, so we’re working on coming up with something that reflects that,” Reidenhour said. “We’ve had a lot going on here, and we’re just now thinking about the fair. But we’ve done some brainstorming and have some ideas in mind.”
Whatever his employees come up with for this year’s exhibit, Guldin is certain it will reflect the feeling and intent of the fair.
“I’m sure it will be something fun because that’s what the fair is all about,” he said. “It’s about fun and celebration and community involvement.”
The Oley Valley Feed booth is a fixture at the fair, Guldin said, having been placed in the same spot for more than three decades.
“I’ve stood in the same spot on the fairgrounds for three nights for 34 years,” he said. “I’ve practically worn a hole in the asphalt, and it’s been great because we get to meet really great people and see old friends and maybe bring in some new customers.”
When asked if he thought his company’s 2021 display might include “Dutchie,” the fair mascot cow whose picture is featured on the front of the fair book, Guldin was elusive.
“It might be, but it might not be,” he said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”
