PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The state Department of Environmental Management is warning Rhode Islanders to not feed wildlife after a North Providence couple was exposed to a rabid raccoon.

An Environmental Police Officer responded to a call on Aug. 31 responded to a call in North Providence, where they spoke with the couple and saw that the raccoon had an injured foot and difficulty balancing. The officer euthanized the raccoon, and the next day it was sent to RIDOH State Health Laboratories for testing.

It was confirmed positive for rabies on Sept. 2.

The DEM reminds Rhode Islanders that feeding wild animals is illegal and can lead to the transmission of diseases. Rabies is found widely in raccoons throughout Rhode Island.

Rabies infects the central nervous system, and without proper treatment, can result in brain damage and ultimately death.

In addition to not feeding wild animals, the DEM recommends making sure all dogs, cats and ferrets are up to date on their rabies shots; walk your dogs on leashes and never let animals wander unsupervised; and securing all garbage cans so animals cannot scavenge for food.
